Revisions to the LWE Fall 2011 Class Lineup

Due to a low response to our Consumer Math class we are replacing it with the following class, which will be offered to those 12 yrs old and up.  If you have already registered for classes and would like to put your student in this class instead of what you listed on your registration form, please email Liz McCullough at mccullough29@comcast.net.
 
Debate / Current Events
Ages 12 and up
Facilitator:   Ro Laberee
 
In this class we will study and practice the formal method of interactive and representational argument.   We will use current events and will develop each student’s ability to play from either position with equal ease (PRO and CON).   Your student will get lots of public speaking practice and will be keeping up on current events as he/she develops this valuable skill.
 
The students will grade each other on their presentations which will be ongoing throughout the year.   The rubric to be used is attached.
 
IMPORTANT NOTE:  We will have light weight topics and heavy weight topics on the agenda throughout the year.  The topics may include sensitive ones such as Right to Life vs. Choice and Gay Marriage, for example.
 
Students will be required to participate. They will occasionally work in teams.  They will be required to show respect to all classmates at all times.  They will be required to act professionally at all times.   On the class dates when we conduct formal debates, the students will need to dress in business/professional attire.

Mission Statement

Living Water Home Educators is composed of homeschool families in Burlington County, NJ and surrounding areas who come together to support one another. Each family that homeschools is an independent, private school that has the freedom to install the beliefs and values that we, the parents, feel are most important to our children. Since this group is not affiliated with any one particular church, we feel it is important for you to know where the leadership of this group stands so that you can feel comfortable participating in the activities and events we offer.
