Greetings, Members! Well, I survived my first Spelling Bee as an anxious parent. I was really impressed by the poise of all the children. I, on the other hand, lacked such poise. It wasn't so nerve-racking when kids other than mine were carefully spelling out their words. But from the point when Maddie was given her word until the moment I heard that blessed word, "correct", I held my breath! Darin and I stressed to her that it doesn't matter how many rounds she was still in. Just the fact that she participated made us proud. After all, how many of us would sit in a room testing our spelling expertise against our friends with a roomful of on-lookers to boot! Hats go off to the 24 students who participated. The contestants this year were over double the amount from last year! Hope to see even more next year! Keep spelling! Brook Gall Coming Up This WeekMon Feb 9 Tue Feb 10 Wed Feb 11 In This Issue

Then with a laser pointer, Mr. Hosko will show us where to look for these using our bare eyes or binoculars (yes, be sure to bring a pair!!). Finally, we will view them through one of the most sophisticated scopes available to mere mortals! Don’t worry about the cold. You can just step 2 yards to the inside and get warmed by the fire if you feel chilled. Spanish Classes with Valerie HandletonHello everyone! I thought I would tell you of some classes I have available! Here are the classes where I currently have openings: Spanish II (H.S./early college)--Grammar and Conversation--Great along with the Reading Class! Reading, Conversation, Grammar Class (Combined--Accelerated Spanish I and Spanish II). The reader we're using starts out with language that's easy to understand. Spanish for Children of Native Speakers of Spanish (Roughly ages 9-11)--Great class for children who are accustomed to hearing Spanish but who aren't accustomed to (or comfortable with) speaking Spanish! Spanish for Four Year Olds--Learning with Games, Songs and More! Anyone who knows some Spanish and is interested in an informal conversation/chat class may contact me as well. This isn't up and running yet but is a possibility if you contact me about this. If time is an issue, we might be able to meet every other week instead of weekly. I'm also open to all ages (including adults), as long as students can converse at a basic level. The chats will be held in Spanish; a group may be formed according to the ages of those interested. Here's just a little about my background....I have a BA in Spanish and French from Rutgers, New Brunswick, from long ago; I have teaching experience, and I have spent time in Spanish-speaking countries. I also have experience in interpreting and translating. I also wrote for a local paper for a while. (I have a strong command of grammar and composition.) Feel free to ask me for more details about my background. My regular rate is $40 per hour per person. But I do offer considerable discounts to home school families (as long as classes can be held during the daytime). These classes each cost a mere $15 per child per class session (except for the class for children of native speakers--please ask about rates--and the chat/conversation class will likely cost less than $15 each). On that $15 per child per hour rate, the third sibling is free! (Please inquire for rates for fourth child or more.) Other discounts may be available. I also offer budget plans to help you with your payments. Feel free to inquire about that, too! I'd be happy to help you with that! If you're interested in any of the above, please call me for more information. Thanks very much! I hope you can join us! Homeschool Cruise In the Works! This event was originally posted on another homeschool online discussion group and is being organized outside of Living Water Home Educators. Dear Homeschool Family, I would like to invite you and your family on a wonderfully educational, fun trip. We are coordinating a homeschool cruise! I have homeschooled my four boys for over 8 years, and am a veteran cruiser. My mother-in-law, who has been on dozens of cruises over the past 15 years, is working with me to bring you a wonderful vacation that will inspire and invigorate your homeschooling journey. Dates: November 1-8, 2009 What makes THIS homeschool cruise unique is that we will be having many activities set up for the homeschool families that will be traveling together. Possible activities will include scavenger hunts, Game shows (ex. Jeopardy, Family Feud, etc.), Scrabble tournaments, sing-alongs, talent show/skits, lots of get-to-know-you activities and opportunities for both the kids and the parents to interact. On our two days at sea, we will have activities lined up all day to help make this a unique experience in travel for your homeschool family. Special pricing will remain in effect for the 1st & 2nd person rates until March 15. The 3rd & 4th person rates are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed until booked, but should be available through that date as well. After that date, Holland America reserves the right to raise the rates, depending upon availability and how the ship is booking. If the prices go lower at any point, Holland America will give us the least expensive rate. Prices listed include all taxes, port charges and government charges. There is no fuel charge currently, but Holland American reserves the right to impose a fuel surcharge if oil prices go over $70/barrel. Inside cabin – Lower deck Outside cabin with obstructed view Ocean view with window Balcony A deposit of $175 is necessary for each occupant in the room. The full deposit will be returned if the room is cancelled three months before the cruise. Each cabin will also receive a $50 onboard credit to use as you wish. Please forward this information to any homeschool group or individual that may be interested in joining this unique adventure. Please contact Loni Kaplan at adamfolk@hotmail.com with any questions, as well as with your reservation requests. We look forward to sailing with you and getting to know your family as we share this exciting piece of our homeschooling journey! Sincerely,
