 LW Leadership Faith Statement
The Holy Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God and contains His completed and final revelation to man. We do not endorse or encourage the use of any teaching that conflicts with what is contained in God’s Word. The Bible, in its original form, is without error in its entirety. The Word of God has been and will remain the ultimate authority as we seek His wisdom in representing His group in a way that honors and magnifies the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Greetings Members!

I’ve been homeschooling for 10 years now (16 if you count everything I’ve taught my son since  birth!).  In looking back I can remember different seasons during these years.  There were seasons when our school looked more like play – we spent hours playing board games or constructing things, always with the hidden agenda of learning something.  There were seasons when most of our homeschooling was NOT at home – the field trips and co-op opportunities were too good to resist.  There were long dry seasons of training and discipline with an eye toward the future – doing what we could to equip Jack for his adult years.  In all these seasons, there were many, many things we did to help us stay the course and keep our eyes on the goal.

My recommendation to any homeschooling family is to always do as many things as possible that will support you in your call to homeschool.  However, if a family could only manage to do one thing to help them stay on track, I would, without hesitation, advise them to attend the Education Network of Christian Homeschooler’s (ENOCH) annual convention every year.  There is no better place to get so much support, information and inspiration in so little time!  Setting aside two days (May 29-30) to help you get regenerated for an entire year of homeschooling, doesn’t seem like such a big investment of time and energy.

But of course, I’m probably preaching to the choir.  Some of you have probably attended the convention in the past.  The people that need to hear this advice are probably not on ENOCH’s mailing list.  They may not even have heard of ENOCH!  Unfortunately, this advice is for them and may be just the thing they need at the end of this school year.  Maybe they just don’t realize what they’re missing.

Please partner with ENOCH in helping spread the word to the homeschooling families that are less connected than you might be.  This year, first-timers to our convention will receive a $20 rebate if they pre-register.  How much more inviting can we get?  If you know of homeschoolers who have never been to the convention, please invite them to attend.  Direct them to ENOCH’s website (www.enochnj.org) or better yet, print out a brochure for them to keep. There may just be a workshop description or two that will entice them!

ENOCH’s whole reason for existence is to reach as many NJ homeschoolers as possible in order to walk alongside them and make their homeschool experience richer.  If each of the 5,000 families who received a convention brochure in the mail would target one other homeschool family, the NJ community of homeschoolers would be strengthened tremendously.  Please pray about who you can invite!

Academy of Natural Sciences Launches Family Volunteer Program

Hello,

I am Lois Kuter, Coordinator of the Volunteer Program at The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. We are launching a family volunteering program here and I wanted to tell you a little about it.

We think that this new initiative might have a special appeal to home school families. Family volunteers function as a volunteer unit working together on the same volunteer job. A family volunteer can be a mom and dad and a child or children, a grandparent and grandchild, a mom and child, dad and child, or an adult sibling and younger brother or sister. You work as a team where an adult is paired with a child.

Currently we have two areas where Family Volunteers can work: Dinosaur Hall and The Dig  (weekdays) and Special Craft Activities  (specific weekends)

The minimum age for children volunteering with adult family members is 8. (Our minimum age for teen volunteers working on their own is 14.)

While this is a new program for the Academy, other museums have found that there are lots of benefits both to the museum and to families who get involved:

1. Kids get experience working with the public in a safe and supervised way.
2. You get to be your child's direct supervisor and job coach.
3. Children begin to develop job skills like recording hours, scheduling time and working as a team.
4. You have fun together!

We will be holding a Volunteer Open House here at the Academy on Wednesday, April 15th, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. This would be a good opportunity to come and get information and talk to us about family volunteering.  Or you could simply contact me and I can e-mail or mail you information. The Open House is not required in order to apply.

Homeschool Planner Orders Being Taken!

Hi everyone!

Last year, several families joined me in ordering student school planners. I am getting ready to order them again for the upcoming school year and would like to know if anyone is interested in purchasing them. These planners have been a big help for my girls in becoming independent students.

You can view each of the planners by clicking on the links below and then clicking on the "view demo" button. I will also have samples of the planners at co-op this Friday at the information table.

Primary Student Agenda (aka Planner)
http://www.premier.us/index.php?option=com_ag_agenda&Itemid=38&task=individual&;agenda_id=4

Elementary Student Agenda (aka Planner)
http://www.premier.us/index.php?option=com_ag_agenda&Itemid=39&task=individual&;agenda_id=19

Middle School Student Agenda (aka Planner)
http://www.premier.us/index.php?option=com_ag_agenda&Itemid=40&task=individual&;agenda_id=36

High School Student Agenda (aka Planner)
http://www.premier.us/index.php?option=com_ag_agenda&Itemid=41&task=individual&;agenda_id=55

I am also interested in ordering two of the Supplemental Resoures. They are the "Information Literacy" resource and "Book Log" resource. Each resource is 55 cents, but there is a promotion going on until the end of April where you can get two resources for the price of one. The deal with the resources is that they need to be included in every planner that is ordered - you can't just have them included in some of the planners.

You can view the "Information Literacy" and "Book Log" resources here:
http://www.premier.us/index.php?option=com_ag_complements&Itemid=45

PRICING:
Primary, Elementary and Middle School: $4.13 plus .55 cents for the two supplemental resources = $4.68
High School: $4.90 plus .55 cents for the two supplemental resources = $5.45

SO, if you are interested in ordering, please email me which planners you are interested in and if you are fine with including the two supplemental resources. All orders need to be placed and full payments received by APRIL 17TH. That way I can receive the order and distribute them before co-op ends.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Will We Finish the School Year On Time?

Many homeschoolers live a lifestyle of learning all through the year and never consider what month it is. They are free to work at their own pace and not be bound by the calendar year.

But other homeschool moms may have very good reasons to be concerned about finishing their school work by June.

Some families have children at home and children in school. They may want all their children to begin and end their summer vacations at the same time.

The constant knocking at the door from the neighborhood child can be frustrating to both you and your son who is supposed to be doing his math.  It may be easier to just take a break when Johnny next door is taking his break.

Most curriculum revolves around the traditional school year.  If you are not studying at the appropriate times, you can be frustrated because a science experiment calls for  autumn  leaves when you are working on Science in the spring!  If you are in this category, the spring can be an important time of reviewing materials to see whether you are on track to complete them by the June break.

If you think you are behind, make changes now and you might just finish on time after all.

Start by eliminating these time stealers:

Too much driving around in the car. This is huge time waster in Atlanta.  The days are broken up by going out, and then there is the extra time spent preparing and dressing children and then settling them down when you come home.    Do most of your errands at night and on weekends. Schedule children’s lessons only during convenient days and times.  If you can’t get piano lessons at a time you want, then find another teacher.  A mom has to stay home a lot to have enough time to homeschool.

Television, telephones. Turn these off or tape the shows you like so that you can watch them at times that are convenient to you.

Interruptions from others. Be firm and consistent with your friends and relatives. Establish time for them, but your students are the first priority, not your friends.

Eliminate unnecessary school work. Textbooks can have a lot of extra work that is boring and unnecessary.   Remember: you own the book - so make it work for you. You don’t have to work for the book.  Look at each of your children’s books. Cut out or cross out unnecessary pages.  Get over your desire to finish the book. Teach the chapters and do questions orally to eliminate a lot of student paperwork.

Children are not progressing. You may have to change their curriculum or get extra help.  If your books aren’t working, switch them. If you have a child with serious learning difficulties, you may need some help from a tutor.

You won’t ever have enough time to teach everything. When you plan the year, be realistic.  There is so much to teach and so little time. You will not be able to cover all the information in the world.  That’s O.K.  The Holy Spirit is a much better teacher and He teaches full time and doesn’t takes a summer break.  You are His assistant.  Be content with God’s plan of time limits and constraints.  Man makes his plans but God directs his paths.  If you are frustrated with how the year has gone, you can rest in the knowledge and hope that if you are obedient to the Lord, all things will work together for you in the long run.
