Please Call to Terminate Mandatory Homeschool Notice Bil

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker (District 28-Essex) has filed a bill, A1375, that would require any parent intending to homeschool a child in New Jersey to file a notice with the local public school superintendent by August 15 containing the child's name, age and residence.

Her bill would result in the filing of 44,000 pieces of needless paperwork every year one for every homeschooled child in the state. Under her bill, parents could lose the right to homeschool their child merely because they miss the deadline. If the parents tried to homeschool anyway, they could be taken to court or investigated by DYFS.

New Jersey already has a sensible legal framework for homeschooling that has worked for over 40 years. It requires parents to provide an education equivalent to what public schools provide. No changes are needed.

Action Requested
If you live in Assemblywoman Tucker's district, please call her at (973) 926-4320 and ask her to withdraw A1375. Your courteous message can be as simple as:

"Please withdraw A1375. New Jersey has a sensible legal framework for homeschooling right now. No changes are necessary."
Use this link to see if you live in Tucker's district.

Background
A task force composed of HSLDA, Education Network of Christian Homeschoolers, Catholic Homeschoolers of New Jersey, New Jersey Homeschool Association, and National Black Home Educators, and others, opposes A1375.

I was recently asked: "What's wrong with adding a requirement that homeschoolers file a simple notice each year?" I responded: "Would this improve any child's education?" The candid answer I received was "No."

Both nationally and looking at New Jersey by itself, homeschoolers score at least 30 percentile points higher on standardized tests than others. Homeschool students receive an outstanding education and are courted by many colleges.

We greatly value you and your support it is a privilege to serve you! If you or someone you know is not a member of HSLDA, will you consider taking a moment today to join or recommend us and support our work defending individual families threatened by government officials and protecting homeschooling freedom for all? Join now at www.hslda.org.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom!

Sincerely,

Scott Woodruff
HSLDA Senior Counsel

Beginning on January 26, 2012, this program will shift to Thursdays at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, picking up where our collection starts (with Medieval Art).  You are welcome to join us for the remainder of these sessions, even if you did not participate in the first 7 sessions at the Penn Museum.

Please see the information below regarding program specifics and registration.  We hope to see you here at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for this series!

Tuesdays Are Used Curriculum Sale Days on the LW Discussion Group!

The LWHE Used Curriculum Sale will not take place this year.  The cost of renting a church plus the fact that the turnout has not been high the past two years.

To replace this, LWHE will have Used Curriculum Sales days on the Yahoo discussion group!  Every Tuesday, you can send your emails to the Yahoo group advertising used books, DVDs, and educational materials. In these emails be sure to have folks email you off-list.

If you are not yet a member of the Living Water Yahoo Discussion Group, you can join today by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lwhe and click on the JOIN THIS GROUP button.  The discussion group was created exclusively for Living Water members.

Leadership Faith Statement

The Holy Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God. It contains His completed and final revelation to man. We do not endorse or encourage the use of any teaching that conflicts with what is contained in it. The Holy Bible in its original form is without error in its entirety. The Word of God has been and will remain the ultimate authority as we seek His wisdom in representing His group in a way that honors and magnifies the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mission Statement

Living Water Home Educators is composed of homeschool families in Burlington County, NJ and surrounding areas who come together to support one another. Each family that homeschools is an independent, private school that has the freedom to install the beliefs and values that we, the parents, feel are most important to our children. Since this group is not affiliated with any one particular church, we feel it is important for you to know where the leadership of this group stands so that you can feel comfortable participating in the activities and events we offer.

Activities Disclaimer

Please be advised that any activities that are advertised in the Living Water Weekly eNews or website may not necessarily be activities that conform to Living Water's Faith Statement (see above). Members should not make any assumptions about the teachings or content that may be provided at these activities and should exercise due diligence before deciding to participate. These include activities that are considered as "outside interest" as well as those activities (including field trips) that are organized exclusively for Living Water members.
